Mount Vernon on a Map

Located in Fairfax County, Mount Vernon is surrounded by Washington, DC suburbs. Across from Prince George’s County, Mount Vernon is bounded by Woodlawn and Hybla Valley to the north, Fort Hunt and Accokeek to the east, Maryland and For Belvoir to the west.

Mount Vernon History

Perhaps better known than the town itself is the Mount Vernon Estate, the plantation home of George Washington. The estate’s land had been in the Washington family since 1674 and expanded when George Washington became the owner in 1761. A beautiful mansion built in the Palladian style, the estate remained Washington’s country house until the time of his death. A popular tourist destination, visitors can also check out nearby George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, which was in the business of whiskey making and milling. During Washington’s lifetime, it was the largest distillery in America.
